Schuyler County is located in the heart of New York’s Finger Lakes, well positioned for business expansion with ample land and building space. It is a semi-rural county comprised of twelve towns and villages. The county seat is located in Watkins Glen, a lakeside village that is home to Watkins Glen International Raceway, Cargill Salt, and US Salt. Schuyler County has a low population density and a great deal of available land. Our permanent population of 20,000 is surrounded by four larger metropolitan areas. During the tourist season the Watkins Glen area sees over 1.5 million visitors, as racing enthusiasts, wine aficionados and nature lovers flock to the region.
Maintaining a balance in our economic base of agriculture, tourism, retail and manufacturing industries is a high priority for our community and business leaders.
We have a great deal to offer prospective businesses, including affordable electrical power, proximity to colleges, universities, and research institutions, excellent K-12 schools, and a healthy lifestyle centered in the scenic and rustically elegant Finger Lakes region. Lakes, marshes and forests surround us, attracting rare birds, wildlife, and human visitors.
Like much of the Upstate New York region, Schuyler County has a significant pool of trainable workers who are accustomed to a low cost of living and the associated wages found in smaller rural areas. We also have extremely affordable land and real estate, and easy access to major truck and rail routes. These benefits are particularly attractive to high-tech, green technology, tourism, food and manufacturing businesses.
A “shovel-ready,” pre-permitted Business Park has been developed for occupancy on State Highway 414, only minutes from I-86 and I-90. The Park is connected by rail and fully wired. Developed with sensitivity to our natural surroundings, it overlooks wetland ponds and beautiful pastoral areas which are home to rare bird species and aquatic wildlife.
